Background
The Green Energy Act was passed into law in the Ontario Legislature on May 14th, 2009. The legislation, and the regulatory changes and policies that flow from it, include a range of measures intended to foster a culture of conservation and encourage the development of renewable energy projects. Complementary to the GEA is the feed-in tariff program (FIT) that would guarantee specific prices for energy generated from renewable sources and encourage investment in Ontario.
What is a Feed–In Tariff Program?
A FIT program is a simpler way to contract for renewable energy generation, with standardized program rules and contracts, including standardized prices. Also, it provides exemptions from municipal controls and approvals (e.g., zoning, site plan control, etc.) for renewable energy generation projects.
