As experienced lobbyists, we know how the Government Relations field is perceived by newcomers. Lobbying politicians seems like a secretive, unseemly, insiders’ business. But in fact, it’s no different from any other sort of negotiation, and no less accessible to outsiders. All newcomers to lobbying have questions about how it’s done. What are the processes? Who do you need to know? What do you need to do? How can you, as a stakeholder, affect change? Contrary to what people believe, lobbying – when done right – is not about selling access to powerful people. We’ve designed these training modules to demystify the field and allay your fears. Government Relations is not only for professionals. It doesn’t require elite contacts, trade-offs, or insider access. We’ll show you that government is open to citizen input – you just need to learn to do it in a way that speaks to politicians. After completing these interactive modules – including the questions and practice sections – you’ll be able to identify the players in government, know how to find them, how to approach and pitch your issue to them, and how to keep your issue moving forward. Once you learn how lobbying works, you’ll know how to gain traction for your issue and you’ll be more comfortable interacting with decision makers. These modules are appropriate for people with little or no experience in government relations, anyone who wants to know more about how government works, people looking for a different approach, and lobbyists who want to pursue a more ethical strategy. Each chapter concludes with a quiz and practice exercises to get you started on locating the right contacts, developing the appropriate strategy, and getting government officials listening to your message. |
